Pier Information. The ship docks at Praça
Mauá. Downtown is 10 minutes on foot. Copacabana is 15-20 minutes by
taxi. Ipanema is farther but has better shops and restaurants. Most
taxis quote flat rates. |

Shopping. Trendy boutiques are in Ipanema.
Shop for gemstones (Stern's), shoes, and leather. On Sundays, there is
an interesting hippie market in Ipanema, but most shops are closed
except in the Rio Sul Shopping Center. |
Cuisine. Check out the pastries at the
Confeitaria Colombo in downtown. Lunch at the Café do Teatro. Try a
churrascaria (e.g., Marius in Ipanema). Drink a caipirinha.
Caution: Stick to hot, cooked food. Avoid leafy salads and raw
vegetables. Drink only bottled water and beverages. |
Other Sights
The Top. The cable car to the top of Sugar Loaf
Mountain and the tram to the top of Corcovado (Rua
Cosme Velho, 513) are highly recommended.
Museums and Monuments of Rio. Museums, closed Mondays,
include the Carmen Miranda Museum, with its collection of kitsch
memorabilia; the Fine Arts Museum; and the Modern Arts Museum.
Municipal Theater. Opened in 1909, the theater was modeled
on the Paris Opera and built of marble, granite and bronze, with a white
and gold Louis XV foyer. The spectacular Café do Teatro serves
lunch only.
Botanical Gardens. Inaugurated in 1808, these beautifully
landscaped gardens feature an avenue of Imperial palms.
Rio’s Beaches. At the Sugar Loaf end of Ipanema is a cafe
perfect for people-watching,
Golf.
The Gavea Golf & Country Club
is usually reserved for members on weekends, but allows visitors to play
during the week. This
course hosts the Brazilian Open.
The Hotel Do Frade & Golf
Resort: rain forest, high mountains, streams and lakes, clear waters
and the nearby sea front provide memorable surroundings.
Caution: Do not wear jewelry or expensive watches, or carry large
amounts of cash ashore with you. Don’t walk with a purse; use a money
belt instead. Pickpockets and purse-snatchers are common with kids
and teens trying to involve you in a conversation. |
